3M is a leader in this field, offering products ranging from healthcare technology to office supplies. Recently, its sales and marketing team for the hardware sector in Central America and the Caribbean sought new ways to use technology to improve some of their key business metrics, such as distributor point-of-sale (POS) coverage, availability of over 30 product categories, market penetration, and measuring the productivity of their field team across 7 countries.

3M chose Intelligis Technologies, a recognized leader in GIS commercial applications in Latin America, to implement a real-time solution that managers now use to view 3M’s operations in a geographical context. In this way, 3M can help its distributors identify opportunities to improve their commercial performance.

Intelligis implemented SmartMaps® TradeMarketing to enable the field force of over 40 commercial marketing specialists to report on the conditions at points of sale (POS) and make decisions immediately when necessary. For example, if a distributor is lacking a particular product, the commercial marketing specialist can send an order through SmartMaps® at that moment. Intelligis’ solution allows users to download all this field data in CSV format and displays indicators such as the number of visits made to each POS by each marketing specialist, their coverage area, and each distributor’s market share.

“This tool allows me to know, in real time, exactly where my products are missing from POS and take immediate action to increase sales, penetration, coverage, and overall productivity,” said Juan Carlos Espinosa, Regional Manager of the Hardware Channel for 3M in Central America and the Caribbean.

Eighteen months after implementing the solution, 3M presented it as a success story to their business leaders in the region. The company plans to implement it across the rest of Latin America.
